Falling in Love with Purple Hill Lane

Recently, Katrina and I listed a rare property on Creemore's exclusive Purple Hill Lane. Looking out over the village this enclave provides the best of country living while remaining close to our delightful village's amenities. 10 Purple Hill Lane is a beautiful home set on a rolling property. Expansive windows allow a changing landscape view each day and throughout the seasons. Natural light illuminates the well-appointed and lovingly maintained home, where three bedrooms and three baths invite either full-time living or a fantastic weekend lifestyle. We sat down with sellers, Walter and Shanna, to learn more about this stunning property.

Your house is on a lovely and unique street. What do you both love most about Purple Hill Lane? What do you know about the origin of this unique development?

All the properties have custom-built homes, have a great deal of privacy, and, since it is a dead-end street, is extremely quiet. We understand that Pat Prime was the original owner of the development and built the house next door to ours and lived there for some time. The street has a very special group of neighbours who can be counted on in any emergency. We host each other for dinner, and once a year, someone holds a garden/dinner party for the entire street.

What was one of the primary reasons you both wanted to move to Creemore?

Creemore is part of the Niagara Escarpment and is very unique in that it has no main thoroughfare running through it and has all the main necessities of life right in the village.

Why did you choose 10 Purple Hill? What about the house did you both fall in love with?

We fell in love with the large windows, the wonderful view and the ambience of the street.

What changes have you made to the home?

We have not changed the house's structure, but have upgraded the kitchen, all the bathrooms, installed heated floors, upgraded the insulation, replaced the shingles, furnace, water heater, heat exchanger, water softener and installed the interlocking brick driveway and patios.

What is your favourite place to sit in your home and why?

There are two locations: first on the main floor, making the most of the floor to ceiling windows and admiring views of Creemore's Mill Street, and second on the lower level (you can't call it basement) with views of the patio and the private, tree-lined back yard all with the village as a backdrop in the distance. The lower-level family room has two large walkouts that allow this lower-level room an abundance of natural light. It is a tough choice with both lower and upper levels affording wonderful views.

We love your property – what is special about your specific property?

10 Purple Hill Lane is the only property on the street with a view of the village and hills to the north. It is a very private piece of property, well treed and peaceful. The back yard has a large flat area for adult and kid games. Of the 1.6 acres, approximately 1 acre is lawn punctuated with flower beds.

What kind of wildlife do you have?

Deer have their young near the bottom of our property and leave them in the long grass that is part of our 0.6 acres designated as conservation. In the winter we have our share of wild turkeys with the occasional one appearing in the summer. We have a very varied selection of birds visiting our garden: red breasted grosbeaks, pileated woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, blue buntings, flickers, red cardinals, wrens, and of course, robins and finches.

What advice do you have for others looking to move to our country community of Creemore?

Creemore is a very friendly village and is called the ‘Village with a Heart’. It is also a sportsman's dream. It is close to Devil's Glen, Collingwood and Osler for those who like to ski. Wasaga Beach, which has the longest freshwater beach in the world, is only 30 mins away. There are many clubs in the area: golf, cycling, curling, PROBUS, sailing, antique cars, Scotch tasting, lawn bowling and many others. There are also several excellent restaurants right in the village.

Why did you choose Katrina and Val to represent you both on the sale of your home?

First impressions are important. When we met they presented us with the most in-depth research into the local real estate market. They met the impossible deadlines we imposed on them and continue to be upbeat and positive.
